In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions shaking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately offer additional information.
Background: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
This event occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Key developments preceding this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
