EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
